Statutory Funding:

Funding from statutory bodies is raised from taxes and distrubuted through a variety of statutory bodies. These include:

  • Local Authorities
  • Central Government Departments
  • Primary Care Trusts (PCT)
  • European Union
  • Local Stategic Partnerships
  • Learning & Skills Councils
  • London Councils
  • Local Area Agreements

Lottery Funding:

The National Lottery raises money for a range of good causes that benefit communites across the United Kingdon. From every £1 spent on lottery tickets and scratchcards, 28p goes directly to good causes and spilt between the following categories:

  • Arts
  • Charities
  • Health, Education and the Environment
  • Heritage
  • Sports

The money distributed amongst the five good causes and allocated to projects on an open competition basis.

Charitable Trusts & Foundations:

These are registered charities whose primary purpose is to make grants. Their funding may come from:

  • Fundraising from the public - e.g. Comic Relief, Help a London Child and Children in Need
  • Pre-Tax profits of a company
  • An Endowment - a capital sum given to them by an individual, family or company. The endowment may take the form of cash, stocks, shares or land. It provides a tax-exempt income, which funds the grant-giving

Company Funding:

Companies support organisations in a variety of ways. These include:

  • Sponsorship
  • Donations
  • Cause-related marketing
  • Gifts in kind
  • Cash donations (usually for one-off capital costs and very rare)

Social Enterprise - Income Generation:

A social enterprise can take many forms:

  • Unincorporated Associations
  • Trusts
  • Company Limited by Guarantee
  • Industrial &Provident Societies/Co-ops
  • Registered Charities (with trading arms)
  • Community Interest Companies
  • Charitable Incorporated Organisations
  • Company Limited by Shares

Primarily their objectives are for social purpose and their surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners. Individual Funding:

This is simply fundraising from individuals. Individuals may support organisations through:

  • One-off donations
  • Committed Giving Scheme - Give as You Earn/Payroll Giving
  • Gift Aid
  • Events
  • Major gifts
  • Legacies/Bequests
  • General Appeals
  • Street Collections
  • Share Giving
  • Auctions
  • Sponsored Events
  • Membership Schemes

All individual fundraising requires infrastructure and resources to be managed and developed effectively, but this can be an excellent way of generations unrestricted income.
